Annie’s Plaster Repair

Annie is working to slowly remodel an old Victorian house in Detroit. She texts me about how to DIY a wall repair, I call her to advise, and then we text again about the job and from the hardware store as she wonders which spackle to buy.

Annie says:
I had a big event happening at my house and I needed plaster repair work done. it was not a huge amount of work and I decided to take the job on myself. I took pictures and went to the hardware store that the area I showed them needed to be cut out and drywall put up. This did not sit well with me. So I sent Sarah pictures and we discussed how to fix it properly and it did not need to be cut out. I followed her guidence and it came out great! I used the technique for other areas. She has only given good direction with the proper materials.”

The images below are actual text exchanges during her plastering repair:

note: efflourescence is when salts seem to grow from the plaster, it kind of looks like a white mold. It is not mold and you can just scrape it off.

I called Annie after she expressed frustration and talked her through the project and how learning sometimes means doing things twice. Annie successfully finished patching the walls before her party!
