Beginning Building for Women

Sun, May 31 • 1 PM $65.87 (scholarships available)

This class is intended to build confidence with tools and building materials.

If you don’t have experience with basic construction, it can seem impossible to work with large materials and dangerous tools.

From using a skill saw to moving giant pieces of wood by yourself, we will explore how to do big things when you don’t have experience. This workshop answers the question: how does a 5’5” person move 4' x 8’ sheets of material by themself? How does one use a powerful drill on a ladder and not get hurt? Why does it seem impossible to hammer a big nail (hint: it might be the hammer, not you!). Or how do you buy something big and safely get it out of your car at home? (hint: leverage is your friend).

This class will explore leverage, working safe and smart, tool use and basic skills from cutting to hammering to drilling to carrying lumber in a safe and fun way. We will also review hardware so you know what type of screw you really need when you are scratching your head in confusion at the hardware store. This class provides a foundation for basic building.

Please note: Participants are welcome to bring their own tools, but tools will also be provided.

While this class is designed for women, all genders are welcome!
